Bike riding is a great adventure, most of the time.

The fall off of my electric bike is in the rearview mirror. After breaking my arm near the wrist, I have been totally healed for months short of a little discomfort when the weather is about to change. Having spent my professional life as a weather forecaster, it is ironic that I now have a new forecasting tool.

I did learn a few things from this bike riding mishap however. First, riding with one of our grandson’s is always a joy. Second, giving him my helmet was needed as he didn’t have one at our home. But it left me vulnerable to a greater injury if I had gone up and over the handlebars. A new rule for riding is that he has to bring his own helmet along.

As it turned out, when I fell, I went down and into the ebike. As you would expect, I extended my arm to brace the fall and the asphalt path won the day.

Finally, electric bikes typically weigh more than many standard bicycles. My ebike is not the latest generation and it is heavy. While I have both an ebike and a traditional bike (and enjoy both), I realize that if you are going to ride an ebike make sure you are prepared for potential unsteadiness or worse when you stop abruptly. If new to an ebike this year, practice the mount and dismount several times before heading out on your cycling adventure.
