Maybe you just need to refine your purpose.

Finding purpose is a phrase often thrown about. Maybe we shouldn’t think of finding purpose, as if it is missing or we don’t have purpose in our life now. Maybe we should think of purpose as something that can be refined along the way. Someone once told me that we are like potter’s clay in the hands of an artist, we too are clay in God’s hands. God can form us over time.

Frankly, I would rather think of me and you as diamonds in the rough. Years ago, I studied and collected gemstones and diamonds. I know, my wife is one lucky woman! Diamonds have been studied and collected forever. The ancient Greeks thought that diamonds were stars fallen to earth from some kind of celestial storm. The word diamond from Greek translates to indestructible. I like that idea. While I appear all sparkly on the outside, I know I have flaws but in the end I am unconquerable. Now that is a jolt of encouragement that lets me know if I feel I am lost and searching for my purpose in life there is hope and strength already in place to guide me.

We all need to be patient in this pursuit of finding purpose. Wait for the Lord. Psalm 27:14

Be encouraged that God has a plan of hope for life and for your future. Jeremiah 29:11

If you feel like you are wandering in the dust of the desert at this stage in your life, know that God can move you from dust to a diamond. But understand that it may take time for God to answer your prayers. Just like the way a diamond forms from bits of carbon dust, it takes Time + Heat + Pressure in Unseen Places.

Don’t focus on finding some larger-than-life purpose just yet. Your purpose may be right in your home with your family or it may be old/new friends. Allow God to direct your steps. Find things that you do, or used to do, that bring you great joy; so much joy that you just sail away in the flow of life and lose track of time.

Don’t just talk about refining your purpose. Talk is cheap. Ultimately you are looking for something that may bring great meaning and vitality to your life. Age is not a factor. Patience may be a factor. Remember it takes time. Be deliberate about scheduling time to sit in quiet and think deeply. Take time to be with the Lord in prayer. Ask for wisdom and direction. It often takes some heat from life to help us key in on a direction.

Often, guidance on the road to refining comes from an unseen or unexpected place or person. Be ready to jump on new opportunities. And don’t be afraid to dip your toes in the water to explore and discover. Using small cost probes to find purpose is a tried and true way to find joy.

Time to jump!
